Woods and Mediate tied in the tournament with 283 to create a playoff. Then they both tied again in the playoffs with 71 to create a sudden death contest. This is only the third time the championship reached a sudden death playoff. Woods beat Mediate in sudden death 5-4.
Woods had surgery on his left knee 4 weeks ago and had not fully recovered to play in the US Open. Woods became the sixth golfer to win 3 US Opens. Woods ties Bob Jones for the most USGA titles won with 9 titles. This is Woods’ 14th win in a golf grand slam tournament. The Golf US Open is the second grand slam in a PGA season.
